I’m supposed to say monk or doctor or nurse or fireman, or worse, writer or artist or something like that. I’m supposed to say all these things that I think would be bullshit because anyone can corrupt anything, and anyone can make anything kind of a holy act.

I remember I found this video series once by this guy who works at Pizza Hut.

It was one of those short abominations that distract you when you’re mindlessly scrolling facebook and suddenly you’re far down a rabbit hole of Korean women biting large fruits and men confusing pregnancy tests for covid ones. He was showing his short lived audience how to make Pizza Hut cheesy bread.

Unlike how you might imagine the potch-marked semi-suicidal representative of a Pizza Hut employee, this man was putting his whole fucking all into making the tastiest, best cheesy bread possible. Most of the thirty seconds was spent giving us, the viewer, advice on how to really make sure it came out right.

In the final minute, he said something like, “so yeah, if you put your all into anything long enough to be doing it right, it’ll bring you and others a bit of joy, yeah?”

I stared until the next video loaded. One of those videos of the guy cooking outside, whatever.

I watched that too. Then I watched some stuff getting melted by a hot metal ball. Then I watched someone almost cut into a slice of strange looking cake, but they didn’t, and that made me mad. I went in the comments section and got a bit of a rush of affirmation; others were also upset. And then I fell asleep.

The next morning I remembered what Pizza Hut guy had said, though. And that’s how I am going to answer this question, because the assumption that some professions by default are more deserving of my admiration is flat out bullshit. Anyone with enough luck, chance, and privilege can have any profession. It is not a measure of how much I should admire them. The world is fucked enough; choices are limited to most. Even those with all the choices in the world must choose within parameters, or be limited in turn.

So, what profession do I admire the most?

In this moment, working at Pizza Hut seems like the way to go if you truly wish to make the world a better place.
