I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately. Previously this has been solved by time, and perhaps that’s the problem: I feel like I’m out of that.
There’s no concrete reason for this. Several ephemeral ones, though.
The point is actually that I’m very good at speaking the solution to other people. I can deny the existence of classic disconnected “writer’s block” all day, label all the mental illnesses it hides under, recommend the breaks I refuse to allow myself. I can pretend (with disturbing ease) I am functional, that I do not block or break or any b word that suggests stopping.
I’ve always kind of sort of felt like I’m out of time, after all. Time keeps happening anyway.
My daughter just started at a new school. On the other side there’s me, also having just started at a new school. Her for second grade, me for my MFA.
I miss the concrete, I think. I miss fanfiction.
Perhaps that’s the problem. I’ve lost track of the goal in all these other goals. Like, I want to pursue this MFA. I want to get published. I want my new agent to like my work and I want to do good by all these other people.
I forgot the first most goal, the one that started all of it, the one that will continue it: to write something with a poppin’ ao3 community.
Let’s get back to that.
